Overview

Social and Cultural Studies Center was created as one of the research centers in the Academy of Ethiopian Languages and Cultures (AELC) in 2010. The Center studies the peculiar as well as the common social, cultural, and historical features of the different ethnic groups of Ethiopia. It gives priority to those Ethiopian cultures that are not studied and/or endangered because of various factors. The Center focuses on studying the indigenous knowledge of the various ethnic groups of the country and indicates possible ways of their integration with modern thoughts and technology to advance the development endeavors of the nation.

The Center makes efforts to understand and interpret the positive and negative impacts of globalization on the cultures of the different societies in Ethiopia. Through exploration and interpretation of the social and cultural riches of Ethiopia, the Center points out directions on how best they should be integrated into the national cultural policy to promote development in the country.
