AAU Expresses its Exhilaration for the Success of Professor Atalay Ayele

Addis Ababa University (AAU) congratulates Professor Atalay Ayele for his success in winning the 2021 International Award honoured by American Geophysical Union (AGU), Earth and space sciences community.

The award given to Prof. Atalay Ayele is in recognition for making an outstanding contribution to furthering the Earth and space sciences and using science for the benefit of society in developing nations, Susan Lozier, AGU President wrote.

According to the President of AGU, Prof. Atalay Ayele has made outstanding achievements and contributions by pushing the frontiers of science forward. He has also embodied AGU’s shared vision of a thriving, sustainable, and equitable future for all powered by discovery, innovation, and action.

Prof. Atalay did his powered discovery with integrity, respect, diversity and collaboration while creating deep engagement in education and outreach, Susan Lozier stated.

Professor Atalay Ayele held a bachelor’s degree from Addis Ababa University and a doctorate degree from Uppsala University in Sweden. He published more than 34 research papers in leading national and international reputable journals alone and in collaboration of his colleagues.

Prof. Atalay has served in various capacities at Addis Ababa University and has made many community services as well as professional contributions. In recognition of these services, Addis Ababa University conferred him a full professorship in Geophysics in April 2021.

Prof Atalay Ayele is now serving in AAU Institute of Geophysics, Space Sciences and Astronomy, Department of Seismology and Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering.

American Geophysical Union (AGU) is an international, non-profit scientific association whose mission is to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of society since being established in 1919.

AGU aims to advance discovery and solution science that accelerate knowledge and create solutions that are ethical, unbiased and respectful of communities and their values. It awards its highest honors for excellence in scientific research, education, communication, and outreach benefitting for humanity and the environment.
