AAU Inaugurates Entomological Society of Ethiopia (ESE)

College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS) of AAU introduced the newly established Entomological Society of Ethiopia (ESE) at the conference held at CNCS from 20-21 of May 2021.

Entomological Society of Ethiopia (ESE) was founded with more than 200 Entomologists assembled from different areas of Entomology, such as agriculture and medical to study beneficial and harmful insects, vector of diseases, evolution, ecology and biodiversity.

Professor Emana Getu, Presidentof Entomological Society of Ethiopia (ESE) said that  coordinated efforts of professionals have paramount importance to properly control the harmful insects such as; pests and vectors of crops, human and animal diseases, and conserve the commercial insects like honeybee, silkworm, bio-control agents and Ecological services.

As Professor Emana’s expression, the malaria situation in Ethiopia is still needs close follow up, the Tsetse fly vectored animal disease is still claiming the life of thousands of animals in the country every year; the migratory pests, invasive species and regular pest both under field and storage conditions are resulting over 30 % crop losses in average per year.

“Coordinated efforts can solve these problems through the professional societies like the Entomological Society of Ethiopia (ESE). Researchers are going on in differentareas of the country and the results will be uploaded in Entomology database.  After reviewing the collected researches selected and effective ones will be used for the benefit of the community,” he said.

Professor Endeshaw Bekele, Professor of Genetics and member of World Academy of Sciences addressed, “In a country like Ethiopia where the negative and positive aspects of insects are very high, having Entomological Society is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Thus, I really appreciate those who worked hard to establish this important Professional Society.”

The African Association of Insect Scientists (AAIS) will conduct its 24th conference in Addis Ababa Ethiopia from November 22- 26, 2021. ESE together with Addis Ababa University will attend the conference.
