AAU Observes World AIDS Day

HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office of Addis Ababa University (AAU-HAPCO), International Africa anti-AIDS Organization and Addis Ababa City Administration HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (AAHAPCO) have jointly celebrated World AIDS Day on 26th December, 2019 at Mandela Hall of AAU.

Themed on “Communities make the difference” the 2019 World AIDS Day has been commemorated for the 32nd times starting from 1988.

It is aimed to magnify the giant role of Communities in preventing and controlling HIV/AIDS nationally and internationally.

Dr. Tsigereda Kifle, Director General of Federal HAPCO, said that, nowadays HIV AIDS is becoming the main health problem especially for younger generation & productive society.

“We know that Higher education institutes have a great role in raising students with full knowledge, skill, good attitude and ethics.”

So that, Dr.Tsigereda said the university community have to work strongly to reduce and control the vulnerability of students for HIV.

S/r Birzaf Gebru, Head of AAHAPCO on her part noted that, the government starts a big campaign with a centre of the community in order to minimize the spread out of the virus as well as helping and caring of persons living with the virus.

“We have to continue our movement with passion to realize our vision to stop dispersion of HIV in 2030 through developing knowledge, skill and attitude of the community.” Said Birzaf

Huria Ali, Director of AAU-HAPCO said “In our country over 649 thousand citizens are living with the virus, over 23 thousand persons are catching by the virus in a year and over 11 thousand citizens are dying with HIV and related diseases.”

“Specially, the future holder of the country in a year of 15-24, including AAU and different Higher Education institute students are becoming the main victims of the problem”

“Our university community has done several works to develop the knowhow of students about HIV, genital infections and narcotic drugs by offering them different awareness creation programs.” Huria said.

Panellists Mesele Mengisteab (PHD), Zena Birhanu (PHD) from School of Social Work, AAU and Henok Melesse from Prevention Program and Africa Union Advocacy-AHF Ethiopia have discussed on the values of Communities role and policy management to control and prevent HIV.

A short play by the School of Theatrical Arts students, A Music performance by Yared School students and A football match between AAU staff and Hager Fikir Theatre were the additional features of the program.
