AAU, Pioneer in academics, dominant in athletics

For the eighth time in a row since the Higher Education Institutions annual sports competitions ever started, Addis Ababa University finishes again this year at the top of the medal standings in the 2015 tournaments hosted by Adama Science and Technology University from 31 January-15 February, 2015. The ceremony was opened in the presence of high government officials including H.E Dr. Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa University was represented by male and females in single, double and group categories in football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, taekwondo, gymnastics, ground tennis, table tennis, chess, Paralympics, badminton and swimming. Admasu Tsegaye (PhD), President of the Addis Ababa University has been to Adama to support the students in the play fields. 50 AAU support staff were also in service attending to the needs of the students in action.

Mariano Barreto, Head Coach of the Ethiopian National Football team who was in attendance of the final football match, is set to contact four AAU players after their 4-1 win over Mekele University. This is one key outcome of the tournament, unlocking career paths to University students at the stage where they highly need it and also for the benefit of the country at large.

The tournament was beyond sports in that much will be shared among the students, collegiality develops and sense of togetherness will be harnessed.

The Addis Ababa University management has warmly welcomed the sports delegation on the main campus of the University along their glittering trophies and medals.

Jimma University is set to host the upcoming tournaments in 2016.
