AAU’s Special Needs Support Office Congratulates Disability Graduates

Special Needs Support Office of Addis Ababa University Organized a congratulation ceremony for graduate students of this academic year. The office also certified staff members of AAU drawn from 20 different offices who were trained in sign language interpreter in the ceremony held at Nelson Mandela Hall on July 5, 2017.

Sewalem Tsega (PhD), Head of Addis Ababa University Special Needs Support Office, delivered a warm welcoming speech to participants of the event and extended her gratitude to guest of honor from the Ministry of Education, to different sponsor agencies’ representatives and staff members of AAU in organizing this event.

Expressing her appreciation to the AAU’s effort in producing competent graduates that help people in a special need, Dr. Sewalem further noted that for justice in education to prevail higher institutions of education should include every segment of the society.

Representing the Ministry of Education, Mr. Alemayehu W/ Cherkos explained that based on the principle of education for all citizens, the government strives to ensure the rights of disabled citizen’s access to education and various services.

Appreciating the organizers, some of the trainees of sign language interpreters explained that the training was very important for effective communication with deaf students and helps them  deliver best services for the needy once.

At the event wheel chair driver competition winners were given a prize. Also building ramps to the entrance of Nelson Mandela Hall was inaugurated at the moment. Center for students with disabilities was established in AAU in 2006. The Special Needs Support Office provides various services for its students with disabilities (SwDS).
