Addis Ababa University Library has organized Three Training Sessions

  Addis Ababa University Library in collaboration with the research and Graduate program office has conducted three consecutive trainings in open access publishing, Identification of reputable journals and online Journal management for Addis Ababa University staffs and postgraduate students. The training sessions were organized after conducting a need assessment about the emerging library services.

  1. Open access publishing and predatory journal identification training was given for Postgraduate students on January 04, 2023, at Kennedy Library. This training is conducted by Dr.Melkamu Beyene (i.e. AAU Chief Librarian). The training has aimed in creating awareness about the emerging paradigm shifts in scholarly communication and predatory and low quality publishing challenges affecting the open access publishing industry. The trainer has demonstrated major indexing databases and research intelligence tools available to select reputable journals and identify open access contents. There were more than 50 postgraduate students attending the half day training.
  2. The second training was also conducted by Girma Aweke, Assistant Librarian for Public Service on a similar topic, open access publishing and reputable journal identification for college law and governance studies postgraduate students. There were more than 80 postgraduate students attending the half day training.
  3. The third training was given by Getnet Lemma, Assistant Librarian for Technical Service, in a theme of online journal management using the Ethiopian Journals online platform, a system maintained by Addis Ababa University Library since 2014. The online Journal management training was given for 40 Journal chief editors and managing editors from 18 Addis Ababa University Journals on January 12, 2023. The half day training has focused creating awareness for chief editors and managing editors on the use of the Ethiopian Journal Online ( platform already hosted in the ICT datacenter for online submission and automating the publication workflow.  The feedback received from this training was encouraging and participants recommend expanding the training for all editorial board members in each Journal. In this training, the university library and journal owners agreed to work together for the full applications of an online submission and publishing via EJOL plat form soon.

The three training packages also include information and digital literacy awareness session that was given at the begging by Dr. Mesfin Gezahegn, Addis Ababa University Library Senior Staff. The library has also planned another series of training sessions for other groups in similar topics. Additional training topics are also identified. This include; information and digital literacy, Research Data management, Online journal management system, plagiarism detection tool, open access scholarly Publication, reference management tools, Research intelligence tools and the use of open and subscribed e-resources.
