The Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy (IGSSA) of Addis Ababa University is going to launch a postgraduate program on Master of Science in Earth System Physics. The program aims to produce manpower that will be well equipped with knowledge and skill to solve the societal problem and push the forefront of the science forward. The program is geared towards educating future scientists that can conduct research in the understanding of the Earth & its atmosphere and space science and their interaction as a system.

The program focus:

• To prepare future scientist that can independently carry out research activities in the different field of Earth System Physics;
• The systematically oriented delivery of knowledge to young scientists, which will enable them to understand the fundamental and highly advanced principles of the different specializations in Earth System Physics;
• To prepare candidates for further research in the different fields of specialization in Earth System Physics by providing them the knowledge and skills that will enable them to work independently so that they can plan, execute and report findings of research projects scientifically;
• To produce highly qualified and responsible professionals that have regard for the society, which they are serving, humanity in general and nature;
• To prepare young scientists that can use scientific theories and methodologies to conduct their own original research and use other’s scientific studies to develop new concepts in the diverse field of Earth System Physics;
• To identify needs for new knowledge for sustainable development and formulate specific research projects;
• Can provide knowledge based services to government, private sectors, industries and to the public in general at all levels of responsibility hierarchies;

Profile of the MSc program

The MSc program is designed to include 5 areas of specialization or tracks as outlined here below.

1. MSc in Earth System Physics (Geophysical Prospecting):
2. MSc in Earth System Physics (Atmospheric and Meteorological Science):
3. MSc in Earth System Physics (Geodesy and Geomatics Sciences):
4. MSc in Earth System Physics (Seismology):
5. MSc in Earth System Physics (Space Science and Astronomy):

Admission Criteria

To be considered for enrolment in the Master of Science in Earth System Physics, the applicant must meet up the following eligibility criteria:

• Meet the admission requirements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Addis Ababa University.
• Have a BSc degree in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, civil engineering, geology, geomatics, surveying technology, meteorology.
• Have good performance in the aggregate score of Entrance Examination, which will be administered by the Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy and the BSc CGPA score.

How to Apply

1. Based on the admission requirements of Addis Ababa University, the applicant should apply on the https:portal.aau.edu.et for the university level Graduation Admission Test (GAT) (ends in May).
2. After getting the pass mark of GAT, the applicant should complete application form using https:portal.aau.edu.et and submit academic credentials to AAU registrar admission office (Applications for admission to the graduate program for Semester I of 2022/23 Academic Year begins at the end of June).
