Higher education institutions transformation council conference underway

The 36th Higher Education Institutions (HEI) transformation council conference co-organized by Addis Ababa University and the Ministry of Education is underway at the Mandella Hall of AAU’s Main Campus as of today February 26, 2018.

The three day conference featured a 6 months’ performance report of HEIs on its first day addressed by the Ministry of Education. Higher education expansion and enrolment rate, quality and relevance, research and technology transfer, good governance, deliverology and increasing the number of women academia were core points of the report.

Professor Tassew W/Hanna, President of the AAU, stated in his welcoming note that HEIs should take a leading role in setting the country’s development agenda. The Addis Ababa University, said the president, has been playing that role by producing skilled manpower to the country.

The President pointed out that the university is currently tasked with playing the role of demand driven research and technology transformation agent to undertake problem solving researches that can benefit the community and transform the country.

Tilaye Gete, Minister of Education, remarked that the research approach of HEIs needs a paradigm shift from paper value to consumption based/marketability in order to tackle our problems and benefit the community.

The Minister further pointed out that the conference is instrumental in assessing the challenges of HEI. He also urged HEIs to reconsider their requirements for awarding honorary doctorate.

Government officials, university Presidents, Vice Presidents and various stakeholders were in attendance.
