International Women’s Day celebrated @AAU

Women’s Health Research Group (WHRWG), Addis Ababa University, Celebrated International Women’s Day at the College of Health sciences on March 8, 2019.

Professor Zerihun Woldu, Director of Research, AAU, on the occasion stated that gender gap is a worldwide phenomenon usually associated with deep rooted inequalities that hold women and girls back across many spheres of life. These gender gaps, said Prof. Zerihun, need to be bridged or the deep rooted inequalities need to be properly addressed to bring gender equity.

He further underlined that the global axiom of gender equality is not only a fundamental human right; it is also a keystone or a foundation for a prosperous, modern economy that provides sustainable and inclusive growth and recognition that gender equality is essential for ensuring men and women can contribute fully for the betterment of societies and economies.

Honorable Guest of the event Professor Afework Kassu, State Minister, Ministry of Science and Higher Education for his part said now a day the Ethiopian government is practically realizing gender parity and there is promising changes that can be seen on the ground. “However the change is still stagnant in higher education institutions, women are not assigned on top level positions,” said   Professor Afework.
