NEW Graduate Program (MA) in Signed Language Linguistics at AAU
The Department of Linguistics Addis Ababa University is going to launch a NEW postgraduate program (MA) in Signed Language Linguistics.
The program aims at producing highly qualified instructors and researchers who could teach and conduct research on Signed Languages in general and Ethiopian Sign Language (EthSL) in particular and solves Language related problems of the Deaf community.
The program focus to produce graduates who can:
- Serve as an instructor, who can teach EthSL in higher education institutions
- Serve as a researcher, who can conduct research on EthSL in higher education and research institutions
- Serve as an expert, who can prepare EthSL curriculum, textbooks, teaching/learning materials, dictionaries, pedagogical grammars and related textbooks on signed languages,
- Serve as a consultant, who can provide consultancy services related to language planning, mother tongue education, program review, standardization and harmonization of signed languages
Applications for admission to the program are open for Semester II of 2020/21 Academic Year.
Admission Criteria
To be considered for enrolment in the Master’s program in Signed Language Linguistics, the applicant must meet up the following eligibility criteria:
The program admits both Deaf and hearing students. Students who want to join the program:
- Must have completed BA or BSC degrees in EthSL and Deaf Culture, Linguistics, Languages, Literature, Folklore, Psychology or Special Needs Education from a recognized university/acceptable standing. Students from other related fields of Social Sciences and Humanities may also join the program;
- Basic competence in Ethiopian Sign Language is required for all applicants; preference will be given to those who have intermediate or advanced competence in Ethiopian sign language;
- Students coming from little or no linguistic background may audit courses from the BA program in Linguistics or Ethiopian Sign Language and Deaf Culture Studies; and
- Must meet satisfactorily the selection criteria, which may include the entrance examination to be administered by the Department’s Graduate Committee (DGC)
For those who want to apply this program for Semester II of 2020/21 Academic Year, you must pass the Graduate Admission Test (GAT). The GAT is open for one week, from February 1, 2021, till February 05, 2021.
