The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships, Eastern Africa – 2015/16 is designed to increase the number of student’s mobility in a country/ in a region to increase the number of knowledge sharing between universities in one country/ in one region.
These mobility activities will increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the participating Higher Education Institutions towards the ultimate aim of encouraging ‘brain gain’ rather than ‘brain drain’ within eastern Africa region.
The scholarship is designed to facilitate the movement of Masters and PhD students between eastern African national Universities.
Participant will study the selected program that EiABC offers for them that they can see the detail information on this page.
This scholarship is only for the applicant from Eastern Africa, there will be 10 positions available for Master degree and 4 positions available for PhD.
The selected applicants of this scholarship will receive a monthly allowance, according to the level of degree they apply and selected:

Within the final year of studies, DAAD pays a lump sum of EUR 1,025.00 to the scholar-ship holder (in local currency) |
The payment of the allowance will be directly transferred from DAAD to each student, so the selected participant will finalize all of the personal payment during the study term by themselves (Tuition fee, accommodation, stationery, Internet, etc.)
- The Application Procedure
The application procedure for this scholarship will be done by EiABC (Ethiopian institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development) and DAAD following these timeline:

The application Requirement:
- English level minimum in B2 proofed by the official test result
- Translated University’s certificate and transcript.
- For Master applicant, must be in Bachelor degree not less than 4 years or completed all required course equivalent for 4 years (8 semesters) study duration, (applicant with bachelor degree with less than 4 years study duration will not be able to be admitted in EiABC). Ethiopian BSc. duration is 5 until 5.5 years.
- Any other requirement from EiABC (need to be discussed).
In addition to the specific application requirements of the study programme/course you are applying for, please note the following DAAD application requirements:
- The last university degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the time of application.
- Citizenship of a country in Sub-Saharan Africa proofed by the scan of applicant’s passport.
- Bachelors and / or Master’s degree qualification with at least above average results proofed by the scan of complete transcript of previous degree.
- Proof of admission to the desired degree course or official letter assuring admission from EiABC’s Chair.
- For PhD scholarships: Staff member of a public or private university (or candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment)

In addition to the application documents requested by the study programme/course you are applying for, DAAD requires the following application documents:
- Filled and signed DAAD Application Form for In-Country/In-Region Scholarships
- Signed curriculum vitae; please use the Europass CV template (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu)
- A signed copy of this DAAD Information Sheet for Students
- Certified copies of all university degree certificates
- Certified copies of all university transcripts
- At least temporary admission letter including fee structure of respective course (original or certified copy only), or an official letter assuring admission
For Master candidates only:
- Letter of motivation (Maximum 2 pages)
- Academic reference from senior lecturer and proof of employment if applicable (original only)
For Ph.D. candidates only:
- D. research proposal and a detailed work plan (10 to 15 pages); plagiarism will be checked!
- Abstract of the proposal on one page (please include name and title of proposal)
- Recommendation letter by head of department indicating that you are a present or prospective member of staff and how you will be integrated into the staff development agenda of the university (original only)
- Confirmation of study leave from your university (if applicable)
- Confirmation of teaching release (university staff members only)

Duration of Scholarship
The awards are available for up to a maximum of two years (Master) and three years (Ph.D.) respectively.
The scholarship is initially granted for one year and may be extended upon individual request and receipt of a complete application by using the provided form. The application for renewal has to be submitted at least one month before the scholarship period expires.
Value of the scholarship
DAAD will pay tuition fees to the university according to the submitted fees structure and a monthly stipend to the scholarship holder, covering cost of living including accommodation. DAAD rates will apply for the monthly stipend, current rates can be communicated upon request. Later increments of any fees and charges cannot be considered.
In addition, the scholarship holder will receive an annual study and research allowance. This allowance is intended to cover any costs related to the student’s research project. The annual study and research allowance is paid in local currency and is equivalent to the amount of EUR 230.00 for Master’s scholarship holders and EUR 920.00 for Ph.D. scholarship holders. Within the final year of studies, DAAD pays a lump sum of EUR 1,025.00 to the scholar-ship holder (in local currency). This final allowance is granted to cover the thesis production costs in the last year of the course of studies (e.g. second year for Master students, third year for Ph.D. students).
Please note that a DAAD scholarship is not a full scholarship. DAAD will only provide funding as stated above. It is not possible to apply for additional funding (e.g. laboratory, field work, conferences, technical equipment, books, travel, etc.)
