The Institute of Geophysics Space Science and Astronomy (IGSSA) of Addis Ababa University is to host a training workshop from November 30-December 5, 2015 on Seismic Instrumentation and Data Reduction.

The participants will come from member countries of the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Seismological Working Group (ESARSWG). The group comprises Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The working group was setup in 1993 with the support of the International Science Program (ISP) of Uppsala University which is still continuing.

Infrastructure development is increasing in the Eastern and Southern Africa region and understanding earthquake processes is the fundamental knowledge base to mitigate risks in time of crisis. Seismic instrument operation and data reduction skill is not yet sufficient in the region which needs regular update and consistent human resource development. To this effect IGSSA is nominated to host this workshop and several of its staff will participate both as resource persons and trainees.
