The Accounting Department at the School of Commerce was established in 1943. Accounting and Finance as a profession emerged in response to the social, economic and business environment needs. The Accounting and Finance profession has shown a continuous and tremendous growth in the business world. Accounting and Finance, in the modern context of business, is a Financial Information and Communication System that provides various groups of decision makers with valuable and reliable information that makes a difference in their day-to-day business decisions.
The basic rationale of the program is associated with the various organizations that have been increasingly flourishing in Ethiopia, along with the rapid pace of development of the Ethiopian economy over the past periods. Different countries in general, and Ethiopia in particular host various organizations: private, governmental, profit making, non-profit making, service, manufacturing, etc. The business world is becoming increasingly complex and is facing new and greater challenges continually. The Accounting and Finance profession, a key profession in modern business society, will have to meet these challenges. Given the volatility of events, the Accounting and Finance education program needs to provide new skills and knowledge to Accounting and Finance graduates who enter the profession.
This program is designed to prepare students for careers in Accounting and Finance in all economic sectors such as business, not-for-profit, and government organizations. The areas of Accounting and Finance study are Financial Accounting, Cost and Managerial Accounting, Tax Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Government and Non-profit Accounting, Finance, and Auditing. In addition to the above components, it combines and applies several supporting subjects including law, information technology, quantitative techniques and economics pertinent to the accounting and finance agenda.

The vision of the Department of Accounting and finance is:

  • To be the leading graduate and undergraduate Accounting and Finance program in Ethiopia and one of the top programs in Africa.
  • To be  distinguished Accounting and finance program by taking an active interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, expanding our global initiatives, and promoting scholarly engagement in emerging Accounting and Finance issues.

The mission of the Department of Accounting and Finance is to:

  • Provide top quality accounting education programs and support services, including a focus on critical thinking and business ethics, that attract and produce an excellent and diverse student body that enjoy productive and successful careers;
  • Conduct significant and selective scholarly research in accounting and finance, and integrate it into our educational process;
  • Encourage a collegial and supportive culture within the Department, respect and tolerance for people and their ideas, and an environment that supports success and the pursuit of excellence;
  • Build mutually beneficial relationships with the business, government, and alumni communities in order to increase our value to our constituents and supplement our resource base.

Graduate Profile

A student who graduates from the Department will be able to:

  • Design and run all types of organization systems of modern financial accounting;
  • Employ critical-thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills to resolve complex business and accounting issues;
  • Use clear and concise communication to convey relevant financial and non-financial information to the target audience so that decision makers can formulate informed decisions and take action;
  • Utilize technology (such as computers, accounting software, information system and databases) to facilitate and enhance accounting and financial reporting processes;
  • Apply relevant accounting principles and standards to specific business activities and workplace situations;
  • Employ national and international perspectives to analyze accounting and business issues;
  • Identify ethical issues associated with accounting and business situations and apply appropriate principles of ethics and civic responsibility;
  • Use analytical and research tools to monitor evolving accounting standards and practices and to maintain professional skills in a changing business environment;
  • Apply the interpersonal and leadership skills expected of today’s accounting professional;
  • Design and run modern cost accounting system that would enable organizations to determine and control the costs of goods and services;
  • Analyze and design short-term and long-term investment projects for all types of organizations and prepare different types of budget;
  • Actively participate in auditing work, both internal and external, and take part in preparing audit reports;
  • Assess the amount of tax to be paid by the taxpayers and record tax collection systematically and participate in the identification of accounting, auditing, and finance related problems and researching them for pragmatic solutions.
