The strategic objective of the CDS is to achieve excellence and conduct problem-solving research that responds to the needs of the country. Scholars at the six Centers of CDS undertake a multidisciplinary development-oriented research in the areas of rural and urban development, food security, social development, natural resource development, population and development, gender, local and regional development issues.  Each Center at the CDS has identified its research priority areas that should be considered by the College when designing research projects and by graduate students in developing proposals for their thesis/dissertation research.

The newly established Institute of Development and Policy Research (IDPR) is a research wing of the three colleges of AAU, namely CDS, CSS and CBE. The CDS aims to engage in and contribute to development policy and practice through IDPR.
