Programs in the Department

The Department runs undergraduate and graduate programs. These are:

Undergraduate Program

  • Bachelor’s Degree Program in Educational Planning and Management

Postgraduate Program

  • MA in Educational Leadership and Management (Regular, Extension, & Summer) with 2 tracks

(track 1 – Supervision & track 2 – Human Resources and Organizational Development)

  • MA in School leadership (Customized curriculum for high school principals – Regular & Summer)
  • MA in Educational Policy and Planning (Regular & Summer)
  • MA in Educational Planning and Project Management with 1 track
  • MA in Human Resources and Organizational Development in Education (Regular, Extension, & Summer)
  • MA in Higher Education Management & Policy with 2 tracks

(track 1 – Institutional Management & track 2 – Educational Management)

  • PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership (commenced in May, 2008)
  • DeD in Education Policy and Strategic Management ( Special Capacity building Program for MoE and

affiliated institutions)

Profile of the Graduates of BA Program

After the completion of the program, the graduates of Educational Planning and Management will be able to:

  1. Understand constitutional provisions, educational policies, strategies and related legislations
  2. Prepare and execute educational plans and projects
  3. Organize continuous and professional  development programs
  4. Mobilize resources from the local community and other stakeholders.
  5. Provide instructional leadership in the area of curriculum implementation, improvement, school improvement, assessment and CPD.
  6. Promote community involvement by establishing a strong link with the local communities
  7. Initiate and manage educational innovations and changes.
  8. Conduct educational research and training need assessment
  9. Monitor and evaluate educational programs and projects at the various levels
  10. Plan and make decisions through critical analysis of reliable information /data/
  11. Manage and apply policies and guidelines relevant to human and other resources utilization
  12. Allocate and utilize financial and material resources effectively and efficiently
  13. Apply current technologies for educational management
  14. Apply knowledge of federal and regional state policies and other regulatory provisions governing education.

Admission Requirements to the BA Program

Applicants for admission to the Bachelor’s degree program in educational planning and management must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Have a diploma in educational management or related teaching subjects with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2:50 at graduation from an accredited Teacher training institution                         OR
  • Pass mark in the EHEECE set for degree admission in that year.
  • Teaching or administrative experiences will be an advantage to get admission to the program

Master’s Programs

Profile of the Graduates of MA Programs

After the successful completion of the graduation requirements, the Master’s Degree program graduates in Educational Policy and Planning will be able to:

a) Articulate and formulate education policies and plans

b) Manage the education system and implement reform programs very efficiently and effectively;

c) Evaluate education programs and projects and offer innovative suggestions for improvement;

d) Teach in institutions of higher learning and do research in education.

After the successful completion of the graduation requirements, the Master’s Degree program

graduates in Human Resource and Organization Development in Education will be able to:

  1. design, implement, and evaluate human resource and organizational development systems;
  2. plan and forecast future human resource requirements;
  3. plan and organize training and human resource development programs;
  4. conduct training need assessment, tracer studies, and training program evaluation; .
  5. analyze organizational climate and requirements through various Organizational Development

(OD) interventions including teamwork, change management, value-based diagnosis

(organizational culture) systems approach; and

  1. undertake trend and capacity analysis supported with techniques such as bench marking,

business re-engineering process (BRP),and performance based management.

After the successful completion of the graduation requirements, the Master’s Degree program graduates in Educational Management and Leadership will be able to:

  1. identify, analyze and solve problems related to leadership and management of the education system a the various echelon through research.
  2. plan and conduct training and professional development programs in the area of educational leadership and management.
  3. initiate, manage and evaluate educational innovations and changes.
  4. identify, develop, manage and evaluate education programs and projects.
  5. analyse issues related to the leadership and management of education system and develop strategies for influencing policy development.

After success completion of the program, the graduates of the Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership will be able to:

  • Conduct researches and encourage research works in schools and institutions
  • Assess/evaluate school improvement programs;
  • Promote and facilitate school community partnership
  • Promote democratic culture in educational institutions;
  • Manage diversities and challenges in educational institutions;
  • Manage information flows and communication among different stakeholders;
  • Supervise and provide direct assistance to teachers; and
  • Develop, manage and evaluate school projects and programs

After the successful completion of the graduation requirements, the Master of Arts Degree in Higher Education Management and Policy graduates will be able to:

  1. identity, analyze and solve problems in higher education institutions ;
  2. manage and lead higher education institutions;
  3. play advisory roles in higher education institutions and higher education related positions in offices pertaining to designing educational programs and projects; and
  4. serve as instructors in institutions of higher learning in the relevant subjects.

Admission Requirements to the MA Programs

To qualify for admission for the Masters of Arts Degree in Higher Education Management and Policy through the distance mode, applicants must:

  1. have at least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of   higher learning;
  2. currently hold management positions in their own respective Universities/ Colleges; or have relevant professional experience and other supporting documentation particularly related to higher education;
  3. successfully pass the entrance examination; and
  4. fulfill other university wide requirements.

Candidates will be selected on a competitive basis; and other things being equal, females will be given priority.

To be admitted to the master’s program in Educational Leadership, the applicant should have:

  1. first degree from a recognized university
  2. taken pedagogical/professional courses during undergraduate/ post graduate certificate in teaching
  3. At least a CGPA of 2.00 in the undergraduate study,
  4. At least three years teaching experiences,
  5. Fulfil other university wide requirements.

N.B.: 1. Candidates will be selected on a competitive basis; and,

  1. Other things being equal, females will be given priority.

To the other three MA programs, the applicant should have:

To get admission for Master’s degree program, applicants must:

  1. have a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 2.5 and above
  2. successfully pass the entrance examination; and
  3. fulfill other university wide requirements.

  1. Other things being equal, females will be given priority.

PhD Programs

Profile of the Graduates of PhD Program

  • Graduates of the department who hold PhD degrees are desired to have a well-balanced professional capability, competencies and experiences to:
  • Make ethically sound decisions and articulate the values and principles that guide decision-making,
  • Prepare educational policy documents, macro plans and educational project documents,
  • Analyze and evaluate educational policies, projects and programs;
  • Initiate educational innovations and manage educational and organizational changes;
  • Conduct and use research, undertake needs assessments, and tracer studies to strengthen the ties between educational theory and practice,
  • Engage in professional development and support the professional development of others.
  • In general, the expected skills and competencies of the graduates will enable them to play the roles of policy advisors and analysts, educational leaders and managers, trainers, researchers, consultants, and program evaluators.

Admission Requirements to the PhD Program

To be considered for admission in the PhD program in Educational Policy and Leadership, the applicant must:

  • Have earned Master’s Degree in Education from recognized institutions in fields such as Educational Administration or Educational Planning and Management, or Educational Supervision, or Educational Policy and Planning, or equivalent with good grade points relevant to the area and CGPA of 3.5 or above or must have publications in journals or equivalent academic publications.
  • Have strong research bent as attested by thesis grade, which should be “very good” for 5-point scale evaluation while it be “good’ for 3-point scale evaluation or publication after MA degree.
  • Submit two recommendation letters from an employer and his instructor.
  • Submit credential evidences for effective teaching experiences or educational research or educational administrative experiences.
  • Submit sound research proposal for the area of specialization intended to pursue.
  • Note that the relevant non-academic requirements for PhD program of the University shall apply.
