On the 17th September 2009, Addis Ababa University launched the implementation phase of its Business Process Reengineering initiative. This is the culmination of three years of planning and preparation, starting with the development of the 5-year Strategic Plan which highlighted the need for fundamental structural change across the university and lay out a wide ranging set of goals and objectives.

Change@AAU
will not be a short term process, given the scale of the reform and the fact that AAU is one of the largest universities in Africa. Yet many tangible and visible changes will be witnessed from the earliest days of implementation. The reform will be implemented over a number of years with the implementation of the Strategic Plan, culminating with the realisation of the university’s vision to be “a pre-eminent African research university dedicated to excellence in teaching, critical inquiry, creativity and public action in an academic community that cultivates and celebrates diversity.”

The preparations which have taken place thus far have involved fundamental review of the university university structure and all business processes within the university. These processes include:

  • Teaching and Learning (Graduate and Undergraduate)
  • Research
  • Community Service (including Tikur Anbessa Teaching Hospital)
  • Resource Generation, Mobilisation and Management
  • IT
  • Human Resources
  • Student Services
