  • Linguistic fieldwork, descriptive linguistics and typology
  • Sociolinguistics with focus on language variation and change, language standardization and promotion, and language acquisition
  • Ethiosemitic and Cushitic languages (particularly Amharic, Gurage, Oromo)
  • Language, history and culture in Ethiopia, particularly in Gurage
