Overview

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology of the School of Medicine, Addis Ababa University, is one of the Biomedical Science Departments involved in teaching undergraduate medical students and graduate students in Microbiology (MSc and PhD), and Parasitology (MSc). As a pioneer in postgraduate training for Master’s in Microbiology and Parasitology, the Department has been producing and continues to  produce scholars to alleviate the critical shortage of human power in the fields of microbiology, immunology and parasitology both as teachers and researchers for the other sister universities, health colleges, research institutes and regional health institutions in the country.

Historical Background

Modern higher education started in Ethiopia with the founding of the University College of Addis Ababa in 1950. In February 1961, the existing various institutions of higher education came under the central administration of a single university, which eventually came to be known as Addis Ababa University. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1965. In the following years, the Department of Microbiology & Parasitology (DMP) was opened as one of the Faculty’s departments. In the late 1990’s the name of the Department changed to the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology (DMIP). Currently, the Department is involved both in academic (undergraduate and postgraduate) and research activities.

 Units under the Department

As the name DMIP indicates, it includes three major units, Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology and Medical Parasitology.

 Mission and Vision

The mission of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology is to conduct state-of-the-art research and training in the areas of Microbiology, Immunology, Parasitology and other related fields for medical and graduate students. Through such activities, our goal is to improve human health. Additional goals include the development of new knowledge concerning microbiological and immunologic processes as related to human health and disease. The core philosophy of the Department is that its educational mission is most likely to be accomplished by a school that is actively engaged in innovative and competitive research in relevant biomedical areas.
