Program Objectives

The Department seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • To create and maintain an enabling democratic environment where staff and students participate in decision making;
  • To improve the teaching and learning process at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of training;
  • To improve the research and publications circulation and dissemination record of the Department;
  • To provide state-of-the-art consultancy services to public and private institutions and the wider community on demand basis;
  • To actively work towards effectively reducing the misconceptions surrounding the nature of the  academic programs offered by the Department and the general profile of its graduates;
  • To contribute to capacity building in the Geography departments of the various universities of the country;
  • To promote networking with local and international organizations and persons who are engaged in scientific undertakingsthat are of interest to the Department.

Admission Requirements

For the undergraduate program, admission requirements of the department are the same as the general AAU requirements. Selection for admission into the MA Program in Geography and Environmental Studies is made on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination, letters of recommendation and the undergraduate performance measured in terms of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) equal to 2.00 or more. Applicants need to have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography or other fields related to geography such as environmental resources and their management, economics, demography, etc. The admission requirements for the PhD Program in Geography and Environmental Studies include:

  • An MA/ MSc Degree in Geography and Environmental Studies, Demography, Development Studies, Biological Sciences or Agricultural and Environmental Engineering with a strong MA/ MSc thesis (Applicants may be required to give a presentation of their thesis, as necessary); or
  • An MA/ MSc Degree in Geography and Environmental Studies, Demography, Development Studies, Biological Sciences or Agricultural and Environmental Engineering and a commendable research experience after graduation with MA/MSc (as may be demonstrated by publications); and
  • CGPA of 3.0 or above with MA/MSC thesis rated “Very Good” or “Excellent”.
  • A preliminary research proposal (not more than five pages)
  • At least two confidential academic references
  • Interview, if necessary
  • Entrance examination, as necessary
