DESIGN OF BOTANIC GARDEN & ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES

This competition is launched by the Science Faculty of the Addis Ababa University, and the Addis Ababa City Administration, Environmental Protection Authority, with financial support from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa.  The terms of reference and regulations are drawn up in conformity with the Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA) Bye-law on Competitions, and have been approved by the Association of Ethiopian Architects.

The Gullele Botanic Garden is planned to be realized on a large tract of land, North West of the city of Addis Ababa, straddling the escarpment west of the pass on the Gojam road. The project is to be realized in three phases, with Phase I and II being the subject of this competition.

PROJECT PROGRAMME

The project program consists of several building ensembles, outdoor facilities and gardens. The project aims to turn the tide of environmental degradation, rehabilitate damaged eco-systems and ensure sustainable use of natural resources, by serving as an example of proper environmental management for the Horn of Africa region. It envisages enabling the study of nature, promotion of sustainable use of biodiversity resources and demonstration of appropriate environmental technologies.

JURY

A jury committee composed of the following members has been appointed:
Mr. Kari Silfverberg, Architect (Finland),
Prof. Adil M. Ahmad, Urban planner (Sudan),
Mr. Zeleke Belay (Representative of AEA)
Ms. Rahel Shawil (Representative of AEA)

Two deputy members and four reserve members are also in the course of appointment.

PRIZES

The following prizes shall be paid to the winners of the competition:

First prize

ETB 100,000

Second prize

ETB 60,000

Third prize

ETB 40,000

A further sum of ETB 50,000.00 is allocated to be disbursed at the discretion of the Jury to the three winners or other entries deserving recognition of merit. In addition the First Prize winner will be commissioned to design one of the buildings and garden.

PARTICIPATION

The competition is open to landscape designers and architects from all over the world, but participating firms are expected to form an international consortium combining knowledge and expertise from Ethiopia with foreign ideas and skills from the Horn of Africa region or elsewhere. SUBMISSION DOCUMENT

All documents shall be prepared in English. Drawings shall be submitted on eight A1 sheets accompanied by a twenty page design report. Drawings shall be in the metric (SI) system and presented in the following scales:

  • General layouts   .......................  1:10,000 and 1:5,000
  • Detail layouts   .......................     1:2000 and 1:1,000
  • Building sites   .......................  1:1000 and 1:500
  • Plans, Sections & Elevations  .......................  1:100
