The Institute of Development and Policy Research (IDPR) of Addis Ababa University is currently running two research projects in partnership with the Bureau of Finance and Economic Development of the City Government of Addis Ababa, and Tetra Tech/Land Administration to Nurture Development (LAND), USAID – Ethiopia.

PROJECT ONE: POVERTY LEVEL ASSESSMENT IN ADDIS ABABA

Project Title:             Addis Ababa City Poverty Level Assessment Study 2014/15

Project Partner:        Addis Ababa City Government Bureau of Finance and Economic Development

Project Description: The Addis Ababa City Government has designed and implemented Integrated Urban Development Program within the framework of the Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plan (2010/11 – 2014/15) over the last five years.  The Program, among others, has the objective of reducing unemployment and poverty.  In light of this, it is important to conduct a study in order to assess the extent of poverty in the City.  The study will provide insight, knowledge and information on the extent, nature and causes of poverty in Addis Ababa. It will also identify poverty trends in the last five years and will highlight policy-relevant recommendations in order to design appropriate urban development policies, strategies and plans. The objectives of the study are generally to assess the nature, extent and breadth of poverty in Addis Ababa City. Specifically, the study intends to:

  • examine the dynamics of poverty and inequality over the last five years (2001 – 2006 EFY) using relevant available CSA survey data;
  • identify underlying causes of poverty at different levels (i.e. households, meso- and macro) that diminish capacity of households to respond to conditions created by macroeconomic change and policy reform;
  • measure the gap and severity of poverty in 2006 EFY;
  • come up with specific policy-relevant recommendations for addressing challenges to improve the well-being of the residents.

Project Duration: January – May 2015
