The Faculty of Informatics (FOI) is an academic center for Information Science and Technology – the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems – at Addis Ababa University. FOI is a relatively new faculty, which was constituted by the merger of the School of Information Studies for Africa (SISA) and the Computer Science Unit of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, by a resolution of the University Senate in October 2002. It was established to produce qualified manpower at various levels, and to coordinate and undertake research, in the computing areas. FOI aspires to be a centre for academic and professional excellence in the field of Informatics that is committed to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge, and to the training of motivated and responsible computer and information professionals who would play a critical role in the development of the society. Its mission is to provide quality education in informatics so as to take part in the development of knowledge-based society, conduct basic and applied research in informatics and its application areas, and to provide professional service to meet the complex information technology needs for an increasingly diverse society. The objectives are to provide quality education at undergraduate and graduate levels; conduct research under an integrated framework; and provide consultancy and advisory services to the community, at national and international levels. At present, FOI has two departments: Department of Computer Science (DCS) and Department of Information Science (DIS). DCS offers a four-year B.Sc. and two-year M. Sc. programs in Computer Science. DIS offers a four-year B.Sc. program in Information Systems and a two-year M. Sc. program in Information Science. Both of the undergraduate programs are also offered under the Continuing Education Division of the Faculty – at present, in the evenings only. FOI also offers, through its DIS, a two-year M. Sc. program in Health Informatics jointly with the Faculty of Medicine/Department of Community Health. Both DCS and DIS offer up to two service courses to a large number of students of other faculties of the University. The composition of the academic staff in the Faculty is as follows: Professors, 1; Associate Professors, 1; Assistant Professors, 9; Lecturers, 21; Assistant Lecturers, 10; Graduate Assistants, 6.
