Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements - BA.

Students who join the Department are those who have completed their college preparatory education and those who have a diploma level training in Ethiopian Languages & Literature and who can meet the requirements for Advanced Standing admission.

Admission requirement MA (TeAm)

  • B.A. in Ethiopian Languages and Literature from the Institute of Language Studies, AAU or its equivalent.

  • Successful performance in the entrance exam to be administered by the Department.
  • Fulfillment of other general university admission requirements.

Admission Requirements- MA (ALAL)

Candidates to be admitted into the M.A. program in African Languages and Applied Linguistics should meet the following requirements:

  • first degree in an African language and literature, or linguistics, or education with particular focus on the teaching of an African language;
  • other criteria of selection the nature and necessity of which is left to the discretion of the Department and to be set depending on the number of applicants; these include the administration of standard entrance examination if need be.
  • other regulations of the Council of Graduate Studies, Addis Ababa University;
  • the number of intake will be determined by the availability of resource and human power.

Admission requirement – PHD (ALEL)

In addition to the general admission regulation of the Council of Graduate Studies at the Addis Ababa University, candidates to be admitted to the PhD program in Applied Linguistics in Teaching Ethiopian Languages are required to hold an:

  • MA or M Phil degree in Education (i.e. in Language Education, TEFL, TeAm, Teaching other Ethiopian Languages, etc.), or
  • MA or M Phil degree in Linguistics.

The number of candidates to be admitted will be decided by the joint DGCs of the two departments depending on the available resources and human power.
