About the Department

The Department of Architecture is one of the teaching departments of the Faculty of Technology that offers a BSc in Architecture, MSc in Advanced Architectural Science, and MSc in Cultural Heritage in Architecture and Development. Brief History

The Department of Architecture, which used to be the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, was established in 1963 during the expansion of faculty of technology in the compound of technical school of Addis Ababa at Mexico square. In 1965 it moved to Arat Killo Campus (the current Faculty of science). In 1969 the department of architecture moved to the southern campus which now the department exists. Until recently the Department was the only institute to offer education in the field of Architecture. It was also the only institute to offer a combined education in Architecture and urban planning. Now with the reform the two sections have grown up into two full-fledge Departments (June 2006): the Department of Architecture and Department of Urban and Regional Planning.


Resources

The department has 28 full-time staff members,: Two Assistant Professors(PhD), nineteen Lecturers (M.Sc.) two assistant lecturers, and three graduate assistants.(BSc). It has three design studios and the department shares the lecture rooms and PC facilities with other departments. Students come from across the country and the student backgrounds are highly diverse: the whole group of students comes from after first semester of pre-engineering lesson and after passing the entrance exam at the department. The current Student population at Undergraduate is 150 and Enrolment per year existing in avg. 40, planned 50 undergraduate then 100. Number of graduates per year in average is 30.
Program Objective
Since Architecture is one of the key professions involved in shaping the built environment and urban space, the department has the following specific objectives:

  • to produce competent, creative , critically minded and ethical professional designers/builders; and
  • to produce professionals who are intellectually mature, ecologically sensitive and socially responsible.

Graduates' Profile

The profile of Graduates who finished their study at department can be summarized as:

  • An ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements
  • An adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences.
  • A knowledge of the fine arts as an influence on the quality of architectural design.
  • An adequate knowledge of urban design, planning and the skills involved in the planning process.
  • An understanding of the relationship between people and buildings, and between buildings and their environment, and of the need to relate buildings and the spaces between them to human needs and scale.
  • An understanding of the profession of architecture and the role of the architect in society in particular in preparing briefs that take account of social factors.
  • An understanding of the methods of investigation and preparation of the brief for a design project.
  • An understanding of the structural design, constructional and engineering problems associated with building design.
  • An adequate knowledge of physical problems and technologies and of the function of buildings so as to provide them with internal conditions of comfort and protection against the climate.
