COLLEGES AND INSTITUTESThe structure of AAU consists of 10 Colleges and seven Institutes. CollegesFollowing a new organizational adjustment in the 2012 academic year, the different academic units at the University are reorganized in 10 colleges. College is an academic layer that coordinates and oversees the academic, research, community service and administrative activities of departments/schools/centers within it. It is, therefore, an aggregation of departments/schools/centers for the purpose of promoting integration among academic programs and delivering effective administrative services. Colleges are middle level organizational layers of the University with strategic leadership, managerial and financial responsibilities. They shall coordinate and oversee academic programs, research, administrative, and support services; organize and exercise legislative and regulatory powers within the framework of the University policies. They exercise effective and optimal utilization of resources, facilities and premises. A college may lead a group of departments, schools and centers it comprises. College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture College of Development and Environmental Studies (CDS) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- InstitutesThere are two types of institutes at Addis Ababa University. The first type deals with an academic unit with the principal objectives of carrying out research and publishing the results thereof, and whose staff also engage in teaching at home-base departments/schools/centers. A staff of a research institute shall engage in activities of research and publishing, and teaching for 75% and 25% respectively. There shall also be an arrangement whereby a staff of a research institute shall fully engage in activities of research and publishing and therefore his/her career development shall be worked out accordingly. The second type of institutes specifically refers to Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT); Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and Urban Design (EiABC); Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS); and Institute of Biotechnology all of which have the duties and responsibilities of conducting teaching and research. Academy of Ethiopian Languages and Cultures Institute of Ethiopian Studies Institute of Educational Research Aklilu Lemma Institute of Pathobiology Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources CenterA center at Addis Ababa University is an academic unit that runs and/or coordinates programs of multi/cross-disciplinary nature, and specialized areas of study or services in: a) at least two degree granting academic programs/disciplines at undergraduate, or b) at least two degree granting academic programs/disciplines at least one each at undergraduate and graduate levels, or c) at least two degree granting academic programs/disciplines at graduate level. This is believed to enable the University use common resources (manpower, facilities, offices, etc) efficiently and effectively. It can be jointly established and coordinated by constituent departments/schools in one or more colleges. Its main functions are teaching, research, and provision of community services. Depending on the nature of the disciplines and programs it offers, a center may be equivalent to a department.
