Background | Facilities | Programs | Staff Welcome to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature Historical BackgroundWhat is now the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature (DFLL) came into existence in 1950 as a two-man Department of English when the University College of Addis Ababa was opened. It was situated at Arat Kilo within the Faculty of Arts, which together with the Faculty of Science constituted the University College. In 1961, the Department of English, still under the Faculty of Arts, was brought into the Haile Sellasie I University, Sidist Kilo Campus. It was during this time that the Department of English began to think in terms of a thorough revision of the University language teaching syllabus and a modification of the policies of the recruitment of teachers. The Institute of Language Studies (ILS) of Addis Ababa University was established in 1978. A year later, in 1979, the DFLL started offering courses in as many as five foreign languages - Arabic, French, German, Italian, and Russian. At present, there are 8 foreign languages offered in the department: English, French, Arabic, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese. Apart from the major programmes in English Language and Literature, and French Language and Communication, three of the languages (Arabic, German, and Italian) are taught as minor fields of study; the rest are offered as non-credit courses to interested students and staff of the University. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature currently runs undergraduate programmes in Foreign Languages and Literature (English) and French Language and Communication; Master’s degree programmes in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and in Literature in English; and PhD in four fields of study: TEFL, Literature, Applied Linguistics and Development, and Applied Linguistics and Communication.
