Background

The Department was established 30 years ago and runs B.A, M.A and Ph.D. programs in Linguistics and Philology. It is the only Department in Ethiopia,where more than 80 languages are spoken.

The profound linguistic diversity in Ethiopia offers a fertile ground for linguistic research and humanities in general. The Department has attracted local and international scholars and has produced prominent linguists who are engaged in teaching and conducting research in universities in Ethiopia and abroad.
