Public Universities Sports Festival

 

The Public Institutions of Higher Education Sports Festival (PIHESF) is an annual event that brings together student athletes from all public universities as well as Defense Engineering University College and Kotebe Teachers Training College. Over the past two years, AAU each year brought back home 8 trophies and dozens of medals.

The preparations for this year’s competitions started well in advance and continued through until the last day of departure. Departure date for Ambo University, this year’s (PIHESF), was Friday 03 February 2012. The delegation was 206 strong with 166 student athletes and the rest composed of coaching staff, journalists and support staff. The AAU Sport’s delegation arrived in Ambo town the same day at about 5:30pm to a warm reception from the town’s residents and Ambo University community.

At 2:00pm of 4 February 2012, the Sports Festival opened to great fanfare and festivities. Honored guests present during the opening ceremony included the Ministers of Education, Health and Water Resources along with numerous university presidents and other concerned officials. The Federal Police marching band was on hand playing various tunes to accompany the student athletes’ parade and introduction.

The opening game for the Sports Festival was a men’s soccer match between the hosts Ambo University and Jig Jiga University. During the half time break the women’s 3000m race was conducted in which AAU took first and second place. During the break, a 100m race of visually impaired students was also undertaken in which AAU took first place. For results of other games/matches please click here.
