Dissemination of Research Findings, Technologies  & AAU Publications

Addis Ababa University is committed to recognizing innovation, intellectual property ownership and technology foresight. Accordingly, it encourages its staff and graduate students to engage in meaningful research, publish their findings in local, regional and international journals, and present their research findings in international workshops and conferences. Publication of research findings in reputable journals is a major condition for promotion of the academic staff. The University extends support to publications such as SINET: Ethiopian Journal of Science, which has appeared uninterruptedly for the last 35 years. Many of the professional societies housed at AAU have peer-reviewed scientific publications which enjoy numerous supports from AAU and serve as major research outlets to the staff and graduate students of the University. For example, the Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia has acquired international repute and now serves not only the scientific community of Ethiopia but also scientists from all over Africa. Similarly, the Journal of Ethiopian Studies, Ethiopian Journal of Biological Sciences, HISAB-Ethiopian Journal of Mathematics, Ethiopian Journal of Higher Education, Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Journal, Ethiopian Journal of Development Research and ZEDE-Journal of the Association of Ethiopian Engineers and Architects have made tremendous contribution in communicating and disseminating research findings to the larger scholarly community and in enhancing basic sciences education in the Ethiopian school system and in the community at large. The total number of journals in the university has now reached over 40. Most of these journals publish original works of the staff of the University and other researchers in the region and elsewhere.

The AAU Library System has developed a database of more than 4000 thesis and dissertations produced by graduate students of AAU. This database is accessible online by the wider community. The Library is also serving other universities in the Country.

The University has further given a distinctive emphasis to research dissemination to end users, as it has now ventured a whole new system of research, i.e. the thematic research project. The thematic research projects serve not only the mission of knowledge production and dissemination but also solving current and anticipated problems of end users. Thus, the projects that have already kicked off have been working closely with their respective end users.

It is worth mentioning that the University runs numerous workshops, conferences, panel discussions, stakeholders meetings and demonstrations every year with pertinent bodies, so that the knowledge generated in the University reaches end users. AAU however feels that it is time to work more on designing a systematic way of monitoring the effective dissemination of the knowledge generated in the University to meaningfully solve current and anticipated problems of end users nationally, regionally and internationally.

The research outputs (knowledge, publications and technologies) will be documented and disseminated to end users through appropriate means such as publications, media, webpage, conference, exhibitions, open days, training, etc. or development of the appropriate technological package by way of incubation and techno-parks. Incubation centres and techno-parks will be established within the University. The technology created by the research undertaking will either be directly patented or incubated and piloted for spin-off to the industry. After feasibility study, a proposal will be developed to secure fund for incubation and piloting the technology into usable packages or workbooks. The final product will be demonstrated by various means and channeled for marketing and commercialization thereby generating revenue. The research findings will be used to improve the quality of learning-teaching process. A researcher will get all the necessary supports (technical and financial) from research units and other relevant units in the dissemination of research outputs. Any new research idea, outcome and intervention obtained through this activity will be used for initiating new research projects or influence national policy, strategic plan and end users’ demand.
