OVERVIEW The Yared School of Music, Addis Ababa University, is the only full-fledged higher institution of music education in Ethiopia. It has been in existence for well over four decades.   Seen against the socio-economic and cultural past of the nation, the progress and achievement of the school is significant. Apart from producing capable musicians as teachers, researchers and performers who have been impacting the domestic cultural, intellectual, and socio-economic life of the society, the school has been able to produce musicians of world repute.   The history of the Yared School of Music goes back to the 1940s; in 1946 the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts established the School as a full fledged music training center based on the felt need of music education in the country.  Since then the School was administered by different Ministries and Bureaus. In 1991 EC it became part of the Addis Ababa University and upgrades its program to BA degree in music level.  Today the school supplies performers, arrangers, composers, teachers and researchers to the various private and government cultural centers and different educational institutions. In addition, the school aimed to produce qualified and skilled manpower to meet the needs of the country. |
