Addis Ababa University Libraries Celebrating Open Access Week October 24-30, 2016



Open Access Week, a global event now entering its eighth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.


 Research Commons


Addis Ababa University Libraries has been playing its prominent role to support teaching learning and research activities of the universities. To this effect, the University library opened a Research commons centers for PhD and Masters Student. The center has the following facilities LCD projector, printer, and scanner and Photocopy machines.  Any One who is interested  to use the center for presentation of their thesis/dissertation, discussion with his /her  advisor,  make  debate and discussion with  research /project team or whatever activities  related to research  you want to  do is open. However, to use the center   a head   of reservation is mandatory. Additionally  the center will intertain 25 student at a time.





The culture of wearing Gown

Addis Ababa University Libraries is one of the main role players to make teaching-learning and research activity successful. To achieve these objectives it renders well-organized library services by the diligent librarians to the university community.. The Libraries have established a dress code to allow employees to work comfortably in the workplace. Yet, we still need our employees to project a professional image to our patrons. According to Mesfin Gezagne casual dressing is not suitable for the library; the university libraries’ dress code will help our employees to determine what is appropriate to wear to work. Clothing that works well for the yard work, formal clubs or restaurants, exercise sessions, and sports contests may not be appropriate for a professional appearance at work. Finally he called on all staffers to endeavor to attain the university objectives and respect the dress code.

Subscription of new E-journal database

The university library has been doing a lot of work to support the teaching- learning and research activity of the university. As part of this effort the digitization of 30, 000 e- books (available at: and subscription of e- journals (available at: are available for you. In addition to this, the university community highly needs the most prestigious database of science direct to support science, technology and medicine fields.
After a continuous effort of the university management and the Library, we took delivery of Elsevier products.

Addis Ababa University Library Collaborates with Addis Ababa Culture and Tourism Bureau

collaborationAddis Ababa University Library in Collaboration with Eifl (Electronic Information for Libraries) runs a three   day training for 11 public library employees from Addis Ababa city public libraries from November 25 to 27/2015. The training contains four phases, and this training is the second phase of the program.

The main issue of the training is Public Librarians’ Capacity building in Addis Ababa to develop New Technology-based Services in Libraries which acquaints staff with technology and library services for serving their community properly and creating a culture of reading and library usage in the city.

The trainers Ms. Ramune and Mr. Kasparise are from Lithuania and Latvia. They are offering the second phase of the training. Both are specialists in the organization of Public libraries under the Eifl program.
Addis Ababa University library, based on its plan, renders community-based services through the participation of its experts and professionals; facilitating training with professional trainers for the effectiveness of the program. The library has also discussed with the city’s Culture and Tourism Office to expand the training to all other Public library employees and modernize the libraries for better community services, after completing the coming third and fourth phases of the training program. The library expresses its sincere appreciation to all who contributed to the success of the training and that the library stands poised to work with all who aspire for the creation of modern library in their respective organizations and strive for the expansion of reading culture in the country.

Addis Ababa university libraries held library orientation sessions for fresh students from November 1 to 2at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library. An open session was held for Undergraduate students, which provided newcomers with a forum to learn and ask questions about the tools and resources the library offers, and how they can be used in research at AAU and beyond. During the session more than 300 students attend the program.
