The Faculty of Veterinary Science started in 1938 as a School of Veterinary Science at Gordon Memorial College under the supervision of the Department of Veterinary Services. In 1945 the School was incorporated in the University College of Khartoum following the pattern of the rest of the other higher Schools. In 1956 it was transformed into the Faculty of Veterinary Science, one of the Faculties of the newly established University of Khartoum. The Faculty is located in Shambat campus at Khartoum North along the Eastern Bank of the Nile. There are (9) laboratories in the Faculty, one for each of the departments: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and Veterinary Surgery and Obstetrics. Each of these laboratories is for the use of the undergraduates and well as graduate students and members of the teaching staff. Each laboratory accommodates about (60) students. The Faculty depends on the Main Library of Shambat campus. The family of the late Professor El-Amin Abdalla El Karib has donated his library to become a special library at the Faculty, and it accommodated (30) students and contains (367) volumes and (1326) periodicals. This library benefits the members of the teaching staff and graduate students. Each department has a specialized library.
Research is undertaken in all departments of the Faculty by both the teaching staff and graduate students. The Faculty has published a number of books in English on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Faculty in 1988.
