The Ethiopian Languages and Periodicals Section of the IES Library has the objective of building up a comprehensive computerized information storage and retrieval System for the IES Library. The System enables to gather, collect, store, generate and disseminate bibliographic data related to Ethiopian studies as a whole .
What is a database?
A database is usually constructed to store information about things or persons. For example, a bibliographic database contains information about documents, such as journal articles or conference proceedings. A personnel database contains information about employees. The database consists of records and there is generally a one-to-one correspondence between the records and the things described. In a bibliographic database one record may correspond to one journal article: in a personnel database one record may correspond to one employee.
These data sets are sources of information for different kinds of bibliographic items. They can be books, articles, Newspapers, maps, micro formats, and many others, and provides details bibliographic information about an item and to help a user find out if it is of interest to him. However, a database is computerized reference system like ILIBIS is much more elaborate than the usual library catalog and provides more sophisticated and effective search and access facilities.
To this end, various works were conducted. Among the works that were conducted includes survey of the existing system, definition of the operational requirement, design, data compilation, testing, implementation and documentation are the major once. Currently, for a preliminary phase about 800 journal articles form different scholarly journals (Journal of Ethiopian Studies, Ethiopian Journal of language and literature, Journal of Educational Research,) are indexed for retrieval in the system.
