Founded:

The IES was established in 1963.It is the oldest of the five research institutes of the Addis Ababa University.

Objective :

(a) conduct, Promote and coordinate research and publication on Ethiopia with special emphasis on the humanities and social sciences ;

(b) Disseminate Research Findings through seminars, symposia, conferences and Publications ;and,

(c) collect, restore and preserve Ethiopian's Cultural heritage for Posterity

Library : Houses the largest and the finest collections on anything about Ethiopia and by Ethiopians

Museum: The IES Museum is one of the best organized Anthropological museum in the world .It has unique and rare collections of items reflecting Ethiopians past and present.

Research : The IES develops Research projects ,conducts research involving researchers from the institute and fellows affiliated  it. Research promotion is done through hosting visiting scholars and provision of assistance in the form of Scholarly advise, office and library facilities as well as with processing of visa and travel documents.

Publications : The Journal of Ethiopian Studies a major journal of academic discourse with a worldwide circulation and scholarly readership published since 1963.Other  IES Publications also include proceedings, monographs, research reports, registers and catalogs etc
