Founded: 1963

Objective :

1. To maintain a centre which should assist serious research on Ethiopian Studies.

2. To maintain within its premises a library of books, in all languages, concerning Ethiopia and Ethiopian studies of all kinds; also as complete a collection as possible of books (on any subject) printed in Ethiopian languages (including newspapers and periodicals).

3. To form and maintain within its premises a collection of Ethiopian manuscripts, in particular those of antiquity, or of special historical or linguistic interest; but also including manuscripts of present-day authors.

Major services :

The types of services currently delivered to the users of the library are:

·        Circulation services (on the spot reading services)

·        Referral services (quick answers to user queries and guide to sources)

·        Information retrieval services (guiding users how to use the manual and 

           the traditional card catalogue system )

·        Displaying of newly arrived materials in show cases

Departments:

The Ethiopian Language Department-Located on the first floor .It has a large collection of books and periodicals on Ethiopia and Ethiopian languages  as well as senior Essay and theses of graduates.

The Foreign Language Department - This Department is by far the largest holdings of items written in a number of foreign languages ,of which English, Italian, German and others

The Archives and Manuscripts Department-This has a collection of about 29,000 items of which 16,000 are in Microfilms. It has also about over 10,000 unframed Photographs (About 500 framed 25 in Albums), and about 500 maps. There is also a new research center called the Welde Meskel Research Center, inaugurated in 1996.The Center Which is ,Under the manuscript and archive Department of the IES library, is essentially a center of public archives vital as source of materials for researchers.
