AAU Outreaches Community Service Program to High School Students
Addis Ababa University (AAU) Office of the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer (VPRTT) is providing a one month long tutorial support program to the next year grade 12 students through its Community Engagement Service Directort to help them prepare for the university entrance exam at Menelik Second High School from July 17/2023 onwards.
Mr. Eyob Asfaw, Senior Expert of Community Engagement Service stated that the program is a summer volunteerism support service that started some years back providing computer skills training and participating in the Green Initiative Program.
He said that this tutorial program is the first that the University has rendered support for high school students being provided by university undergraduate students and the trainees are selected from Addis Ababa City five Sub-Cities through the Addis Ababa City Education Bureau.
Eyob explained that the recruitment of the University students who live in Addis Ababa and can serve as volunteers was done through the Director of Community Services under the AAU Office of the VPRTT. The volunteer student teachers who were recruited were given a short training to help in the learning and teaching process, he added.
According to Eyob, it was understood that all the Sub-Cities of the City were invited to participate in the program, but those who are far from the training centre, (Menelik Secondary School) could not participate. “Due to this, we have learned that at least two centers should be set up for such kind of support services in the future,” he reiterated.
