College of Health Sciences Expands Outreach Services as a Strategy to Increase Access to Health Care
On the occasion of Doctors’ Day, in the presence of the President of Addis Ababa University, Dr. Samuel Kifle, and the Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, the College of Health Sciences, under the theme “OK for Good Deeds”, launched the Black Lion Specialized Hospital’s voluntary service program and inaugurated an Intensive Care Unit built with financial support from the German government.
In his opening speech, Prof. Andualem Daneke, the Chief Executive Director of the College of Health Sciences, disclosed that the college has provided medical services to the Mekedonia Humanitarian Association (MHA), which supports elderly and mentally disabled individuals.
Further expanding its outreach, the college is gearing up to introduce psychiatric services at the Gergesenon Mental Rehabilitation Center, in collaboration with St. Peter’s Hospital, Professor Andualem further said.
Dr. Samuel Kifle, the President of AAU, stressed the significance of cooperation between the Black Lion Specialized Hospital and the College of Health Sciences in paving the way for a brighter future for the Ethiopian health system. He called upon the institutions to join forces in executing health policies efficiently and delivering the intended results for the nation.
Dr. Mekdes Daba, the Minister of Health, emphasized the importance of inspiring individuals to engage in charitable activities through community collaboration. She highlighted the exemplary work of volunteer professionals at Black Lion Specialized Hospital as a model for other organizations to follow.
Dr. Dereje Duguma, Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Stephan Auer, German Ambassador to Ethiopia, AAU Vice Presidents and college leaders, staff and students as well as other distinguished guests attended the event.
