Undergraduate Programs

1, Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music

የአርትስ ባችለር ዲግሪ በሙዚቃ

The main objective of the BA degree in Music program is to provide students with a wide range of knowledge and experience in music performance and expose them to the historical, social, theoretical, stylistic, and creative issues that pertain to the various music genres. This will be applied on their Major instruments that will be selected as they first join the school. The school currently has four departments. String, wood wind, brass and percussion. under each department are the following instruments assigned.

String: Violin, Viola, Cello, double bass

Wood Wind: Flute, clarinet

Brass: Trumpet, Trombone

Percussion: Piano, Xylophone

In addition, the school also has a traditional instruments study involving Masinko and Kirar. Depending on the student’s interest, the school also provides Begena and Washint lessons along with traditional drumming.

 2, Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music (Jazz Performance)

In addition to the general music performance stream, a jazz stream has been incorporated for those who want to pursue performance in music that involves improvisation such as traditional and modern Ethiopian music, jazz, popular music and other applicable styles. This stream currently has three departments. String, Wood Wind, Percussion. under each department are the following instruments assigned.

String: Guitar, Bass Guitar

Wood Wind: Saxophone

Percussion: Drum

Graduate Program

MA Degree in Music

The Master of Arts in Music at AAU Yared School of Music (YSM) provides students with unique opportunities to explore a wide range of knowledge in all genres of music as well as theories of culture, music, and music as culture. The program is also grounded in the practice of various Ethiopian music in the form of Ethiopian traditional and modern music, but conducted from within a wide range of interdisciplinary theoretical approaches, including sociology, anthropology, critical theory, feminism, cultural studies and ethnomusicology. Using a variety of disciplinary perspectives the MA program trains to produce capable professionals who can contribute and work efficiently in the field of music

In-service Summer Program

Teacher’s Education System Overhaul (TESO) is a program crafted to help address the serious problems present in the education system. The summer in service programme is designed with the intention of producing competent music teachers for the various Teachers’ Education programme.

Children’s program

This program is intended to provide quality music lessons for the children and youth in Addis Ababa. The program is not only for the summer time but also goes on throughout the year after working hours and Saturday mornings.
