Background and Activities of Teaching Learning Support Office

Teaching Learning Support office (TLSO) is one of the main divisions under Academic Vice President Office of Addis Ababa University. It was established when AAU implemented BPR during its organizational structure, effected in 2013. The activities of the offices are categorized under Teaching Learning, Instructional Technology and Special Needs, which are highly interdependent.

Its roles concentrate on capacity building of the academic staff and students, identifying gaps in the teaching learning process and communicate with the relevant sections to look for remedial solutions collaboratively. TLSO developed Graduate Admission Test Guideline, ELearning and Distance Education Policy and Professional Development Policy Framework. These documents aim at enhancingand satisfyingthe needs of academic staff and students. More than 2500academic staff members have taken Higher Diploma Program training. Under its English Language Improvement Center (ELIC), training was given to 32 academic staffs and 183 undergraduate graduating class students. Covid 19 has forced the educationalists to change their teaching learning modalities.

Thus, TLSO in collaboration with ICT has organized three round TOT on eLearning. In 2008 (EC) TLSO introduced the entrance exam to graduate program applicants by preparing TOR with ICT to enhance the online entrance exam. It also handled the entrance exam until 2019/2020. TLSO equipped all colleges’ graduate program classes by buying 46 interactive white boards and 3220 chairs for the smart classrooms. Life Skills training was given to 106 students with disabilities. 52 students with hearing loss, 5 students with physical impairment and 49 students with visual impairment were attending the training. TLSO conducted surveys on Impact assessment of HDP and Challenges encountered by students with the disabilities. TLSO has also delivered meaning full community services to FDRE Ministry of Defense, AASTU, Oromiya Police College and Gambella University. 117 teachers of these higher education institutes have taken HDP training organized by TLSO.
