AAU Awards Special Certificate to Doctoral Level Students’ Advisors

Institute of Educational Research (IER) and Center for Higher Education Research and Training (CHERT) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) certified advisors trained on “Supervision of Doctoral Students” at the Main Campus, Sidist Kilo, on May 19, 2023.

Birhanu Aberra (PhD), Head for CHERT, said that the Center gives short-term trainings to academic and admin staff members of the AAU. “One of the services offered by our Center is the training of counselors for third degree students,” he added.

According to Dr. Birhanu, the training covered the origin of supervision, approach, supervision styles, system of assigning advisors and other related issues in relation to global experience focused on national as well as university level aspirations.

We conducted this training on the consultant trainees by considering international experience from the virtue of our country, especially in the context of our University,” Dr. Birhanu reiterated.

Dr. Birhanu finally stated that the certificate was awarded to 19 consultants/advisors who were able to complete the 80-hours training conducted both face-to-face and on the internet (online).

Belay Hagos (PhD), Director for IER, in his closing remarks said that the day’s event focused on two issues: awarding certificate for the completion of the training of consultants, and recognition to those who had been participating in the PhD students’ advisory services before the training was conducted.

Dr. Belay explained that the advisory/consultancy service had been given without any training and that had been one of the causes for students to complete their studies much later than they expected. “Although there are other reasons, the role of supervising in the third degree is significant to both the completeness and the deficiency of the program,” he added.
