Program Objective:
General Objectives – the main aim of this program is to produce graduates who do not simply speak foreign languages but understand the culture (in the broadest sense) of the societies in which they are spoken and the study of Europe as a whole, in a friendly and dynamic unit. This necessarily involves the study of modern cultural products of these societies (novels, films etc.) and of the political evolution of these societies in the modern age.
In today’s interdependent world, it also requires the study of how nation states and national cultures fit into the broader European framework and how it impinges on them.
We believe that a command of these languages is essential to cultural understanding, and seek to integrate these two dimensions of the program closely.
The Bachelor Program in Modern European Languages is a rewarding academic discipline, which offers a rigorous, integrated study in languages, literature, culture, socio-economic and political development within the European context.
As a major area of study, it provides an opportunity to acquire valuable insight into the cultural, socio-economic and political development in Europe and beyond. It also provokes a reflection of one’s own values, vis à vis foreign values and their similarities and differences and how they influence each other (global culture).
In addition, the four languages, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish are widely spoken in the African continent either as official languages or as second languages. Moreover, knowledge of two modern European languages increases opportunities for employment.
Specific Objectives – the following are the specific objectives of the program:
- Students acquire language skills in two languages, suitable to communicate in them in a ‘context of work’ (Level B2 according to European reference frame).
- Develop high level manpower that can satisfy the quality requirements of governments, international organizations and private agencies.
- Produce students that are capable to using multimedia tools such as computers.
- Produce students who have confidence, autonomy in learning and stimulate creative thinking and critical abilities through reading, writing and speaking the target languages.
- Produce students that are equipped to conduct scholarly research.
