AAU and Embassy of the Republic of China to Ethiopia Sign MoU

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Embassy of the Republic of China to Ethiopia signed a scholarship agreement under the China-Ethiopia Friendship Scholarship to honour AAU teaching staff and students at the University’s Senate Conference Room on the 3rd of November 2023.

They signed the MoU through Jeilu Oumer (PhD), Academic Vice-President of AAU and Mr. Yang Yihang, Minister-Counsellor of Chinese Embassy to Ethiopia, with the presence of Samuel Kifle (PhD), Interim President of the University, and Ambassador Zhao Zhiyuan, to honour AAU teaching staff and students who have demonstrated exceptional academic, teaching and general performance.

This agreement is in support of the long-standing bilateral friendship between China and Ethiopia and aims at strengthening friendship between the two countries to inspire students of the University to study hard and contribute to the development of Ethiopia.

Dr. Samuel Kifle, in his welcoming remark said that the agreement is to provide second and third degree education scholarships to students and talented researchers who have achieved higher results in their studies.

He explained that the Chinese Government and its Embassy in Ethiopia have established a Confucius Institute at different levels before, to train undergraduate and graduate students, support research projects, as well as financially back students in PhD studies.

Mr. Yang Yihang, Minister-Counsellor of Chinese Embassy to Ethiopia, in his part said, “Last year, the Embassy set up the special scholarship at AAU to support the students’ academic and research projects; many students have benefited from it.

Mr. Yang further said that the Embassy will encourage and support the programs in students and staff exchanges, in the joint researches by helping with the links between AAU and Chinese higher education institutions. “We also encourage the Chinese enterprises to work with the University by recruiting excellent graduates to strengthen the industry-university linkage,” he added.
