AAU’s Performing Arts PhD Candidates Conduct a Seminar

PhD Candidates in Performing Arts of Addis Ababa University (AAU) organized a Seminar on Ethiopian Music and Dance Development at Ras Mekonnen meeting hall on November 01, 2023.

Mr. Sertse Firesibhat, Addis Ababa City Administration, Culture, Arts and Tourism Bureau Deputy Head of Arts Sector, in the occasion said that like Ethiopia’s ancient history, Ethiopian music is very developed, and has a strong tradition culture dating back at least 1500 years.

Sertse added that the biggest milestone in the modern process of Ethiopian music is the contribution of the victory of Adwa, where Ethiopians defeated the colonizers.

Due to the victory of Adwa, it is the chapter where we realized that we need the civilization of the western world in all areas. Many of our scholars have been sent to the West to move from traditional knowledge to modern knowledge and to acquire modern education.  The emperor of Ethiopia at that time also tried his part to bring modern knowledge from the western world to Ethiopia and to develop Ethiopian music,” Sertse reiterated.

Various Ethiopian Music Experts, Theater Arts Professors, University Scholars and other honorable guests attended the special seminar.
