Ethiopian media schools, US Embassy discuss curriculum review for journalism education

The School of Journalism and Communication of the Addis Ababa University together with the Embassy of the United States organized a full day consultative workshop on Monday May 22, 2017. Curriculum review and networking were key areas of discussion.

The consultative workshop is intended to revise curriculum and teaching methodology of Journalism and Communication in contemporary digital age of media environment.

Professor sherry Ricchiardi, media development specialist, author and Professor emeritus at the Indiana University School of Journalism offered a highlight presentation on how to develop skills of expertise and challenges in making students marketable.

Getachew Dinku (PhD), Head of School of Journalism, during the workshop noted that having a flexible and well-managed presence has become a must with the drastically changing digital age of new media. Communication networks, and media content that has occurred with the development of internet services and activities emerged in the digital media space cannot go with the obsolete traditional ways of teaching.

Curriculum and teaching methodology revision are important parts to produce competent and marketable graduate that can meet the requirement in modern media environment,” says Dr. Getachew.

In attendance were Bahir Dar University, Mekele University, Haramaya University and Jimma University and Dilla University among others.
